I was going to call this post Halloween Grinch

Filed under: NaBloPoMo,Swiss Cheese is Holy (Confessions),The Fam — by corazondeswiss @ 7:50 pm

but Alynda posted before I did! I thought I was the only Halloween grinch.  And also I am in agreement with Aly- if you can’t be bothered to dress up, don’t trick or treat.
I don’t know if I’ve ever confessed this, but I am not a Halloween person.  I didn’t dress up for Halloween until I was 5. Because that’s when I found out about Halloween because I went to school. My mom is not a Halloween person, so I guess I am not one by genetics.   But when we were little, she did host Halloween parties for us and helped with the ones at school and take us trick or treating.
And honestly, I could live the rest of my life without ever dressing up for Halloween again. Or going to a Halloween party. I should live the rest of my life without candy, but seriously, what’s life without candy, especially chocolate?  What’s my favorite Halloween candy?  Candy corn.  And I will only it at this time of year.  I’m aware that they make Easter “candy corn” but that stuff is not real candy corn as far as I am concerned.  Also a favorite, chocolate.  In its various forms. Most especially the forms that also involve nuts.  Or peanut butter.  Yum.  And since we have a BIG bowl of candy and have had approximately 10 trick or treaters, meaning I get to eat lots and lots of chocolate.  In addition to the chocolate I’ve been eating since it arrived in our house some time last week.  (Good thing I am back into my 6 am gym class 5 days a week!)
I’ve been dressing up the last 3 years for work because “everyone” does it, and there are costume contests, departments often come up with themes and I don’t want to be a Grinch at work.  And this year I even got to recycle last year’s costume.  Which is good because I spent about $70 last year on my costume and I don’t even care for Halloween.  (I spent $50 on part of it b/c we dressed up as football players and I bought a nice jersey for my G@tors that I could wear to support the team at other times.)
Another confession- I’m nervous about NaPoBloMo…I don’t know how I’m going to post every day this month!  I’m going to be away this weekend, so I’ll be busy tomorrow writing posts for tomorrow, Friday and Saturday so I can get them up while I’m gone.
Anyway- leave your favorite Halloween (or anytime) candy in the comments!

More falling water…

Filed under: Random Cheesiness — by corazondeswiss @ 7:05 pm

After the first hike to Robert Treman State Park, we went to Buttermilk Falls State Park.  Less hiking, plenty of falling water.

Check out my mad posing skillz…

I loved this bridge!

And we went yet another park- Taughannock Falls

Me at the Falls overlook

Almost done with the cop out picture posts.
Happy Halloween tomorrow kids!

Hiking to a waterfall

Filed under: Random Cheesiness — by corazondeswiss @ 7:29 pm

On Saturday after sleeping in, tearful phone calls with my sister and taking our sweet time getting ready, we went to the Farmer’s Market where Her Eyes Are So Blue’s (hereafter referred to as HEASB) boyfriend treated us to lunch- I had a chile relleno, HEASB had Cambodian food and her guy had something I can’t remember.  I bought some fun earrings for myself- hand crafted in sterling with fun stones.  I rarely change earrings, so having some more options is always a good thing.  And I got 4 pair for $27! Sweet deal!
Then we went to the first park of the day.  It was lovely- we hiked quite a bit to get to our first waterfalls, but it was totally worth it with all the gorgeous scenery.

This small waterfall was by the bathrooms.  (What can I say, the sound of rushing water makes me have to pee?!)

This is the stone bridge we crossed…

More of our first state park…

Traveling and Arriving

Filed under: Random Cheesiness,Uncategorized — by corazondeswiss @ 7:30 pm

As I said in my earlier post, day one of my trip started off not quite the way I planned.  The flying part was easy- my flights were all on time, I even arrived early to my final destination!  Because my first flight was so early I watched the sun come up from the sky.  And I was wistful…thinking of Ashley and how this was just the first time that the sun would rise without her on earth.  I thought of how lucky I was to be traveling, and visiting my friend.  (Traveling alone leaves one lots of time to think.) I also spent lots of time on the phone with friends and family between flights in the airports.  (Plugged into the wall because I drained my phone battery.)
I read when I was on a plane or not on the phone…a book called Reconstructing Natalie.  I wasn’t totally sure about it, but I ended up really liking it.  Eventually after 3 flights and hours on the phone, in 3 airports and one book later I arrived at my destination.
First, check out how Frick tried to prevent me from leaving:

I took these first 2 pictures from the plane.
NY from the air

Another one from the air
I loved the dots of color of the trees that had changed from the ones that hadn’t.
That evening, we went to a Tapas restaurant and enjoyed Flights of Wine (5 different types of wine- small glasses that add up to 1.5-2.5 glasses).  I had the Local flight which consisted of 5 glasses of wine from local wineries.
Local Flight

From L to R: Sparkling: Chateau Frank, Celebre, Cremant; Red: Standing Stone, Pinnacle, (Cab, Cab Franc, Merlot); White: Ravine’s Chardonnay; White: Treleaven, Dry Riesling; White: Atwater, GewurztraminerMy friend got the Grapes of the Loire Valley Flight:

We walked around and did some shopping before we went to another restaurant for drinks and dessert.

White Chocolate Martini and Espresso Martini
Yummy desserts!
After our dessert we went back to her house and watched What Not to Wear and Grey’s Anatomy on her DVR. Perfect way for old friends to spend the first night of our weekend.
I don’t want to crash my blog with pictures so I’ll post again with more tomorrow.

Perhaps they are not the stars,
but rather openings in heaven
where the love of our lost ones
pours through
and shines down upon us
to let us know they are happy.
~Eskimo Legend~
The above poem is in memory of my sister’s friend Ashley Elizabeth who was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 12th.  Which was the morning I left on my trip.  My sister called, crying hysterically while I was getting ready to leave for the airport.  My mother left immeadiately after dropping me off to go to my sister.  I contacted friends in G’ville to go to my sister while my mother was on  the way.  Coincidentally this October 12th is the 5th anniversary of my maternal grandfather’s passing.
I flew home Monday but not as scheduled.  (That is literally a post in and of itself.) And attended funeral services on Tuesday.  So my time off was longer than anticipated.  I truly enjoyed my visit with my friend and I promise I will get to posting (with pictures!) about the trip.  But I did want to share with my interweb friends the reason why I have been slacking off since I got back.
In loving memory of

Papa 7/22/30-10/12/02
…two more stars in heaven.

I will write again later this week, but it has been a long, busy full few days since I last wrote.  My days away were wonderful and difficult.  And I’ll explain when I’ve gotten some sleep and back to normal.  In the meantime, I hope everyone is well.

In the air again….

Filed under: It's All About Me — by corazondeswiss @ 8:56 pm

I can’t wait to be in the air again!  I have a 6 AM flight tomorrow to Elmira, NY to spend the weekend with my friend from college.  Actually, let me correct that- my first flight is at 6 AM.  My third flight is scheduled to arrive in Elmira at 2:45 PM.  I’ve bought three books for the flights there and back.  (I’m a fast reader and have had to buy books in the airport when I’ve finished mine while traveling).  My iPod is fully charged and ready to go.  My cell phone is fully charged.  My digital camera.  Chargers for the iPod and phone are packed.  Glasses, spare contacts and saline with contact lens case.  In the requisite plastic baggie, I have my liquids.  Less than 3 oz. of course. My clothes are packed (with the exception of the sweater currently in the washing machine).
My friend has a list at least an arm long of ideas for us to do.  Including the Corning Museum of Glass- where you can make your souvenir.  Seriously, how cool is that??    (So now the whole interweb knows that I’m a total nerd.) We might tour the C0rnell Campus, visit some wineries, some waterfalls, and the college hangouts.  I’m so excited!!!
I won’t be posting from there, but hopefully I will have lots of pictures and stories for you when I get back. And I hope they are not all horror stories about how bad the air travel was!  Write lots while I am gone so my Google reader will be full upon my return!!

First, let me say thanks to all the delurkers.  Nice to meet those of you who are new to me.  And nice to have some old friends stop back by.  I know it has been a quiet week here in Swissland as I’ve had a bout with hay fever.  I haven’t had it for some time, and oh how I had forgotten the horror.  The congestion.  Inability to sleep.  breathe. eat. function.  And because you’re not running a fever, not vomiting, not contagious, you get to go to work.  In my case that means you also get to spend your day trying to make people who are really sick feel somewhat better.  Not so easy when you’d like to lie down in the bed next to theirs and catch up on your sleep.  On Thursday night, when I hadn’t slept through the night in 2 days, I took 2 Benadryl at 8:30, went to bed at 9.  Somehow managed to answer the phone when CP called at 10 (No I don’t know how I did it.  I don’t know if I even carried on a coherent conversation). Slept till 1.  Took another round of Benadryl and slept in till 6:30 (since I’ve been going to the gym in the AM 6:30 is sleeping in.  Weird).  I slogged through my day on Friday and came home a little early, and took a little nap.  Went to bed early again.  I woke up yesterday feeling more human than I’ve felt all week.  So of course I went out and about all day.  First to the quilt shop for the block of the month club.  And then again for shopping at the new Kohl’s with my mom.  (Oh Kohl’s….how do I love thee…let me count the ways…)  Sorry.  In all honesty, for a place that has only been open about a week, it was clean (meaning even though piles of people had been in there the place didn’t look demolished) there weren’t long lines at the registers, the staff was pleasant, helpful.  Makes one enjoy shopping.  More than you do already.  So picked up some new jeans for my weekend away to see my friend in NY this week.  And 3 new shirts.  I haven’t been shopping in ages and it was fun.  Now I just have to wash it all!
